SLU-Madrid Names First Professors Emeritae
Saint Louis University-Madrid marked a milestone Oct. 1 by conferring the title of professor emerita for the first time in its history.
The honor was awarded to Ángeles Encinar, Ph.D. (Spanish), and Anne McCabe, Ph.D. (English), during a ceremony in San Ignacio Hall Auditorium.
Encinar and McCabe, both longtime faculty members, became the first women and the first professors at SLU-Madrid to receive the designation. Faculty, staff and alumni — including some who had been their students — attended the celebration.
The ceremony was led by SLU-Madrid rector William Johnson, J.D. Program directors Anne Mulhall, Ph.D., and Aitor Bikandi-Mejias, Ph.D., highlighted McCabe's and Encinar's contributions to the academic community and to generations of students.
Encinar joined SLU-Madrid in 1986. A scholar of Spanish and Latin American narrative, she has written and edited 28 books and was named "Académica correspondiente" of the Real Academia Española in 2021.
McCabe has taught at SLU-Madrid since 1990. An applied linguist, she has published widely on systemic functional linguistics, discourse analysis and bilingual education. She has also served in leadership roles at the campus, including associate dean, division director and University Core director.
The recognition of Encinar and McCabe as professors emeritae underscores their decades of service and scholarship, as well as their lasting impact on the growth and development of SLU-Madrid.
