Center for Vaccine Development

The Saint Louis University Center for Vaccine Development is a multidisciplinary research center that conducts basic and clinical research on new vaccines and biologics.

About Us

For more than 35 years, the Center for Vaccine Development's integrated team of diverse, highly motivated specialists has worked to improve the health of the St. Louis community and beyond. In addition to its vaccine research, the center trains volunteers in health promotion and infectious disease prevention.

The center is one of 10 research centers in the U.S. recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU), which performs clinical trials to assess vaccine safety and efficacy. Since 1989, it has conducted more than 100 studies enrolling approximately 7,000 participants. Contributions include the clinical development of the intranasal FluMist® vaccine; the development of safe and effective vaccines for smallpox and other potential bioweapons; critical vaccine research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the testing of new countermeasures designed to protect against pandemic influenza, tuberculosis, herpes simplex virus (HSV), hepatitis C, dengue and other infectious diseases.

The center also has an extended-stay research unit for housing volunteers in human influenza studies that necessitate quarantine.
