How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in the SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine's residency programs. 

Most of the residency and fellowship programs use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) — separate but related systems that help pair applicants with programs. 

ERAS

ERAS streamlines the submission process with one standardized application. Individual program guidelines vary, but applicants should generally expect to include the following:

  • Personal statement
  • CV
  • Letters of recommendation (generally 3-plus)
  • Medical school transcripts
  • USMLE or COMPLEX scores
  • Dean's letter
  • Program-specific documents, if requested

The Match

NRMP — often referred to as "The Match" —  uses ERAS applications and an algorithm to fairly and efficiently match applicants with their preferred programs.

International Applicants

International medical graduates who wish to apply must first obtain certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Saint Louis University sponsors J-1 visa applications through and in accordance with the ECFMG. The School of Medicine also sponsors H-1B training visa; however, this is at each program's discretion and requires passing step three of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

Onboarding FAQs

I've been appointed to a GME program. What are my next steps?

Upon appointment to a GME program, please complete the following steps:

  • Submit your COVID-19 and influenza vaccination records, or a religious or medical exemption.
  • Undergo a tuberculosis screening.
  • Pass a background and criminal screening.
  • Pass a drug screening at a designated SSM Health facility. If you are unable to produce enough urine for the screening, you will be given water and asked to stay for up to three additional hours. Failure to complete the screening is considered a refusal to test and may result in the withdrawal of your employment offer. 
  • Complete the Form I-9 and provide documentation that confirms your eligibility to work in the U.S. Failure to meet the eligibility requirements by orientation will prevent you from participating in further training and employee activities.

How long will it take to obtain a temporary license in Missouri?

The temporary Missouri licensing process generally takes eight to 12 weeks. 

To obtain the temporary license, you must complete the USMLE. International medical graduates must also secure ECFMG certification.

Does the SSM Health/SLU SOM Residency Program cover the cost of residents' full Missouri licensure fees?

Generally, housestaff who wish to obtain a full physician's license are responsible for all fees associated with the process. They also must obtain a DEA and BNDD license to handle controlled substances. 

What types of visa sponsorship are available for international medical graduates?

IMGs can receive sponsorship for two types of visas:

  • J-1 (valid up to seven years)
  • H-1B (valid up to six years)
