Internal Medicine Residency

The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program trains internists of the highest caliber in a collegial and collaborative environment.

A Message From the Program Director

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

We put our patients and people first. At the heart of our leadership is the belief that empowered, well-supported residents can offer the best patient care.

This commitment has had a substantial impact: Residents like it here. According to a 2024-2025 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education survey, 99% of our residents would choose this program again. Many of our graduates — all of whom are committed to the same values — are now fellows, attendings, faculty, program directors, division directors, chairs and deans within the institution.

As you explore our website and take the time to visit us personally, we hope you get a sense of our unique culture. We provide a robust educational experience and take great pride in the quality of our graduates who go on to do fantastic things.

Most importantly, congratulations on choosing a career in internal medicine. I sincerely hope you enjoy your time on the recruitment trail.

We look forward to meeting you!

Program Highlights

The internal medicine residency offers a positive, supportive environment in which high-caliber trainees can thrive. The program is rooted in both the Jesuit tradition of caring for the whole person and the principle that adults learn by experience. Faculty emphasize two main values: prioritizing patient care and reflection, and committing to working as a team.

Residents have a rich, diverse set of patient experiences, and they are granted progressive autonomy throughout training. Their hard work is matched by the faculty's dedicated effort to help them meet their career goals, evidenced by the many graduates who go on to join competitive fellowship programs or practice in academic and private settings across the country.

Applicant Review

Candidate selections are based on a range of factors, including geographic location, program signal and connection to the University. Program leaders also seek evidence of character and growth:

  • Did a candidate with a low or failing USMLE or COMLEX score experience an unfortunate circumstance or demonstrate lessons learned?
  • Is a candidate committed to an aspect of the University's Catholic, Jesuit mission, such as service, leadership or advocacy?
  • How has a candidate's clinical clerkship helped define their approach to patient communication and rapport?

Interviews

All interviews will be conducted virtually via Thalamus. There will be no in-person meetings or site visits.
